Canada - Key Updates 2025–2026
Canada cut study permit approvals, Bangladesh remains off the SDS list, PGWP duration now tied to program length, and proof-of-funds raised to CAD 20,635.

This update covers the most significant 2025–2026 policy and visa changes for Bangladeshi students planning to study in Canada. All information is sourced from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Student Visa Cap - Significant Reduction
Canada reduced international student study permit approvals significantly in 2024–2025 to manage rapid population growth. Competition for permits has intensified. Early applications with strong financial documents and a compelling SOP are now more critical than ever.

Bangladeshi Students Cannot Use SDS (Student Direct Stream)
Bangladesh is not on the SDS eligible countries list. Bangladeshi students must apply through the standard study permit stream, which involves longer processing times (12–16 weeks).

PGWP Rules Updated - Duration Aligned with Study Program
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) duration is now more closely tied to program length. Students completing 2+ year programs receive PGWPs of up to 3 years. Single-year programs may receive shorter PGWPs.

Proof of Funds Requirement Increased
As of 2024, Canada requires students to show proof of CAD 20,635 (previously CAD 10,000) for living costs in addition to first-year tuition. Students must demonstrate this financial capacity clearly in their application.
